LinkedIn profile rental in the Netherlands: how you earn and get paid
Article 7:653a of the Dutch Civil Code limits how far an employer can stop side work, which could leave room to apply to earn from an established LinkedIn account, though it does nothing about LinkedIn's own rules and the Belastingdienst still expects to see the income.
Check whether your profile fits
LinkedIn’s User Agreement prohibits this directly. Its Don’ts (section 8.2) bar members from renting, leasing or otherwise monetising access to the service, and from using another member’s account, including by sharing log-in credentials or copying cookies. LinkedIn may restrict, suspend or permanently close an account it believes is shared, without warning. Read the full risk page before you apply.
The short answer
LinkedIn rental income goes on your Dutch income tax return, usually as winst uit onderneming or inkomsten uit overig werk, and the Belastingdienst decides which fits, so ask a belastingadviseur. You can apply from the Netherlands, and if accepted you would be paid in dollars rather than euros through PayPal, Wise, a bank wire or stablecoin. Article 7:653a of the Civil Code voids a ban on side work unless an objective reason justifies it, but Dutch law does not touch LinkedIn's own terms: the User Agreement prohibits renting account access, and LinkedIn can restrict or close your account.

How the money reaches you in the Netherlands
Box 3 counts bank balances on 1 January, including accounts outside the Netherlands, so money parked abroad is not out of sight. The Belastingdienst page names neither PayPal nor Wise, so ask your adviser how to report a balance there. Payment arrives in US dollars, so the other thing to watch is what it costs to turn them into euros.
| Method | Status | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| PayPal | Works | PayPal's Dutch fee page shows no withdrawal charge to a local bank where no conversion is involved, and changing a business balance into euros costs 3.0% above its base rate. It states no conversion rate for personal accounts, so read the user agreement before you pick that account type. It shows no receiving fee on personal transactions without conversion, so ask how your payout is classed, since a commercial receipt may cost more. Source |
| Wise | Works | Wise's Dutch price page lists 6.11 USD per USD wire or Swift payment received, with account details free. Its USD help page says ACH is free on a personal account, with a small fee for businesses based in the Netherlands. If your payout travels by wire, that sum comes off every daily payment, so settle the rail first. Source |
| Direct bank transfer | Check first | ABN AMRO's personal tariff is a useful benchmark: 9 euro on each receipt in foreign currency or from outside SEPA, and exchange costs come on top when money is converted. A charge like that adds up quickly on daily payments, so get your own bank's figure first. Whatever stays in the account on 1 January joins your box 3 total. Source |
| Stablecoin (USDT/USDC) | Limited | The AFM tells consumers that crypto itself sits outside its supervision and that big risks remain, and its register shows which providers are authorised. Skip USDT: ESMA's October 2026 Opinion wants platforms out of non-compliant stablecoins, and its issuer register shows no Tether entity. Circle's USDC is on it, but use only a provider on the AFM register, as MiCA requires across the EU, and expect a valuation job at tax time. Source |
Tax and declaring the income
The Belastingdienst has a heading for money earned outside employment by someone who is not an entrepreneur: inkomsten uit overig werk. Its 2026 guidance lists online work and foreign clients among the examples, says the income must be declared, and lets you deduct costs the work needs. The result bears income tax and the income-dependent Zvw contribution. If you count as an entrepreneur for income tax, the same money goes in as winst uit onderneming.
The Belastingdienst decides which one fits your circumstances, so ask a belastingadviseur whether yours is overig werk or winst uit onderneming. VAT is a separate test: you can be an entrepreneur for btw without being one for income tax.
- KVK's three criteria are supplying services independently, earning from them, and dealing with people beyond friends and family. KVK says your weekly hours make no difference to registering. Ondernemersplein also asks whether you work regularly and not just on a one-off job.
- Once registered, KVK says you usually file btw returns each quarter, even with no earnings yet. The KOR is voluntary and covers turnover of up to 20,000 euro in both the current and the previous calendar year.
- Next to a salary, KVK warns that business income counts in your total, and the higher that total, the less heffingskorting you get. The starter's and self-employed deductions need at least 1,225 hours a year, which KVK says is harder to reach alongside a job.
- If you are an entrepreneur, tokens received for services must be converted to euros, and that sum counts as turnover. Tokens in box 3 are valued on 1 January at your platform's rate that day.
- Dutch crypto providers report customers' transactions and balances for periods from 1 January 2026.
This is general information, not tax advice. Rules change; confirm your position with a local tax adviser.
Side-work clauses, residence permits and AVG points to check
The order that works here: your contract, then your permit if you have one, then your inbox, and only then KVK and the tax return.
Article 7:653a of the Civil Code makes a clause void if it bans or limits work for others outside your hours, unless an objective reason justifies it, and your employer may not disadvantage you for invoking this. A government report of 2025 dates the rule to 1 August 2022. It is not a free pass. Your employer may argue an objective reason if outreach could touch its customers, a concurrentiebeding is a separate matter, and we found no Dutch ruling on this arrangement. KVK's own advice is to check the contract first.
Non-EU nationals have less room. The IND says students may work no more than 16 hours a week or only in summer, with a work permit from UWV, and says nothing about self-employment there. Its highly skilled migrant leaflet ties the permit to a recognised sponsor. Working for yourself is a different route: UWV's carve-out reaches only work relating to the business a self-employed permit holder runs, and the IND's self-employed application asks for proof that the company is of essential interest to the Dutch economy. We found nothing saying a student or highly skilled migrant permit allows this, so ask the IND first.
The AVG, supervised by the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens, exempts only purely personal or household activity under Article 2(2)(c). Business conversations in your inbox are awkward to fit there. We have not read the AP's own pages on this directly, so confirm with the AP, take paid third-party access as an unanswered question meanwhile, and move those conversations before anyone else logs in.
How much demand is there for profiles from the Netherlands?
US-located senior profiles draw the most demand, so one based in the Netherlands starts further back. The likely buyer is selling into the Dutch market or wants Dutch speakers. That pool is narrow, and even a strong profile may sit for some time before a fit appears.
- Realistic: a senior profile with contacts who hold buying roles at Dutch companies.
- Unlikely: a network built up abroad, with few contacts actually working at Dutch companies.
We do not publish a list of eligible countries, and living in the Netherlands neither qualifies nor disqualifies you. A specialist reviews the actual profile. If you want a straight answer first, ask in the notes box when you apply.
How it works
- Apply, free. Industry, network size, commitment length. No documents, no fee.
- Human review. A specialist sends one monthly figure, normally within three business days, or says the profile is not a fit.
- You approve each campaign. Target lists and message templates come to you first, and your blocklist is set on an onboarding call.
- Daily payment from the day your campaign goes live, with a monthly log of everything sent. Pause any time; after the three-month initial term, 30 days' notice ends it.
The risk, in plain terms
LinkedIn’s User Agreement prohibits this directly. Its Don’ts (section 8.2) bar members from renting, leasing or otherwise monetising access to the service, and from using another member’s account, including by sharing log-in credentials or copying cookies. LinkedIn may restrict, suspend or permanently close an account it believes is shared, without warning.
That risk stays with you, and we do not indemnify you against losing the account or its connections. This is why we would not call it risk-free passive income, whatever other sites say. Read our safety and risk page and sections 4 and 5 of our Terms.
Businesses in the Netherlands: renting LinkedIn accounts for outreach
Article 11.7 of the Telecommunicatiewet bars unsolicited commercial electronic messages unless the sender can show prior consent, and its business exception reaches only contact details the recipient published for that purpose, or recipients established outside the EEA under that country's rules. Ondernemersplein applies the ban to unsolicited email, app and SMS messages, with ACM fines of up to 900,000 euro per breach. We have not read how the ACM treats LinkedIn messages or who counts as the sender on a rented account, so a Dutch company should confirm both with a Dutch lawyer before renting LinkedIn accounts for outreach. The lawyer's answer would cover Dutch law only, because LinkedIn prohibits renting accounts under its own rules.
Our page for businesses explains how account-based outreach is run and what it costs to think through.
Questions people in the Netherlands ask
Can I earn money from LinkedIn in the Netherlands by renting out my profile?
Possibly, because it turns on a specialist reviewing your profile and quoting a monthly figure or saying no. Payment is daily in USD once a campaign is live, and you declare it to the Belastingdienst. Weigh one thing first: LinkedIn prohibits renting out access, and it may restrict or close the account.
Is LinkedIn rental income in the Netherlands inkomsten uit overig werk?
It may be, but the Belastingdienst decides from your circumstances and we cannot call it for you. That heading covers money earned outside employment when you are not an entrepreneur for income tax. If you are an entrepreneur, it goes in as business profit. A belastingadviseur can tell you which of the two yours is likely to be.
Do I need to register with KVK for LinkedIn rental in the Netherlands?
Check it against KVK's criteria: supplying services independently, earning from them, and dealing with people beyond friends and family. KVK says weekly hours do not change that, and Ondernemersplein asks whether you work regularly rather than on a one-off job. If you are unsure, the KVK Adviesteam takes these questions.
Can my Dutch employer stop me from renting out my LinkedIn?
Only with an objective reason, if the ban is a clause against working for others outside your hours. Article 7:653a of the Civil Code makes such a clause void otherwise. Your employer may still argue a reason if your outreach could touch its customers, and a non-compete clause is a separate question. Talk to them before you start.
Do I pay box 3 on LinkedIn rental money in a Wise or PayPal account?
Not when you earn it: that money is income, while what is left on 1 January may also count as a box 3 asset. The Belastingdienst says bank balances on that date include accounts outside the Netherlands. Its page names neither PayPal nor Wise, so ask your adviser how to report a balance there.
Can I get paid in USDT in the Netherlands?
Pick another route. ESMA's October 2026 Opinion tells authorised platforms to stop services around non-compliant stablecoins, and the Dutch tax side still expects tokens valued on 1 January. No Tether entity is on ESMA's issuer register, while Circle is, so USDC through an AFM-registered provider, PayPal, Wise or a bank wire are the alternatives.
