LinkedIn profile rental in Germany: how you earn and get paid

Germany gives freelancers one month from starting to notify the Finanzamt under section 138 AO, a clock worth knowing before you apply to earn from your existing LinkedIn profile.

Check whether your profile fits

LinkedIn’s User Agreement prohibits this directly. Its Don’ts (section 8.2) bar members from renting, leasing or otherwise monetising access to the service, and from using another member’s account, including by sharing log-in credentials or copying cookies. LinkedIn may restrict, suspend or permanently close an account it believes is shared, without warning. Read the full risk page before you apply.

The short answer

Your Arbeitsvertrag or Tarifvertrag is the deciding check in Germany: a Nebentätigkeit clause may ask for notice or for prior written consent, and breaching a notification duty can justify an Abmahnung. With that settled you can apply, and if accepted you would be paid in US dollars rather than euros, choosing between PayPal, Wise, a bank wire or stablecoin. If the activity counts as freelance, section 138 AO gives you one month from the start to notify the Finanzamt. None of this alters LinkedIn's position: its User Agreement prohibits renting account access, and it can restrict or close the account.

How the money reaches you in Germany

Before a payout reaches your Girokonto, someone has to turn US dollars into euros: PayPal, Wise or your bank. Establish who does it, and for how much, ahead of choosing, since the fixed part of any fee recurs daily.

MethodStatusWhat to know
PayPalWorksPayPal's German price list, updated 7 September 2026, shows 2.99% plus a fixed fee on commercial receipts, with 1.99 points more for many senders abroad, including the USA and Canada. Converting a business balance to euros costs 3% over its base rate, and a withdrawal to a local bank account has no fee of its own where nothing is converted. Source
WiseWorksWise's USD help page says ACH arrives free and each wire or Swift payment costs 6.11 USD, so ask which rail your payout uses and confirm the charge in the app. Source
Direct bank transferWorksYour bank converts a USD wire at its own rate, so read your own Preisverzeichnis. As one example, an ING fee excerpt dated January 2026 lists a 1.00% spread on incoming USD; ask your bank for its current figure. Section 67 AWV makes residents report incoming foreign payments to the Bundesbank but exempts those of up to 50,000 euro, so a daily payout should stay under that line. Source
Stablecoin (USDT/USDC)LimitedLeave USDT out. ESMA's Opinion of 8 October 2026 tells MiCA-authorised providers to stop services around non-compliant stablecoins, leaving only time-limited wind-down such as conversion or withdrawal, with leftover client exposure to be fixed within three months of publication. It names no token, but its issuer register lists Circle and no Tether entity. For USDC, use a firm with a MiCAR licence: BaFin says only those may offer crypto services since 1 July 2026. Source

Tokens leave a trail too. Germany's Kryptowerte-Steuertransparenz-Gesetz entered into force on 24 December 2025 and sets a reporting duty for crypto-asset providers, with reports going to the Federal Central Tax Office. Keep your own records so they match.

Tax and declaring the income

The first German question is which box you fall into, because each one brings different paperwork. We will not pick for you. The Finanzamt decides from the facts, and a Steuerberater can tell you how it is likely to see them. Sort this out after the employer and permit checks further down, because the clock in the first item starts when the activity does.

  • Freelance (freiberuflich). Section 138 AO requires you to notify the Finanzamt within one month of starting. Since 2021, founders have had to send the Fragebogen zur steuerlichen Erfassung electronically through Mein ELSTER, unless the office waives that for hardship.
  • Trade (Gewerbe). Section 14 GewO requires a notice to the local authority when you start. Section 11 GewStG gives individuals a 24,500 euro allowance against trade income.
  • Other services. Section 22 no. 3 EStG covers service income that fits no other type. It stays outside income tax only while the year's total is under 256 euro, so reaching that figure brings the whole amount in, and losses cannot offset your other income.
  • If you are also employed. Under section 46 EStG, an assessment follows when income not subject to wage tax exceeds 410 euro, so a small side income can change how you file.
  • VAT. The Kleinunternehmer rule in section 19 UStG applies up to 25,000 euro of turnover in the prior year and 100,000 euro in the current one. Waiving it binds you for at least five calendar years.

This is general information, not tax advice. Rules change; confirm your position with a local tax adviser.

What changes by Land or municipality

The income tax statutes are federal, but where you are registered settles three practical things: who supervises data protection, what trade tax costs, and your church tax rate if you pay it.

WhereWhat differs
Your Land: data protectionThe federal commissioner lists a separate supervisory authority for each of the 16 Länder, and says these generally handle the private sector. A complaint about your account would go there.
Your municipality: trade taxIf the activity is a Gewerbe, the municipality sets the Hebesatz under section 16 GewStG, so the same profit can cost a different amount from one town to the next.
Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg: church taxIf you belong to a church that levies it, Kirchensteuer follows your income tax. The federal services portal gives 8% in these two Länder and 9% in the others.

Nebentätigkeit, residence permit and GDPR rules to check

Begin with the Arbeitsvertrag and any Tarifvertrag, because Nebentätigkeit wording varies. In a case the Federal Labour Court decided on 2 July 2025, the collective agreement asked only for written notice while the contract demanded prior written consent. Do not skip the step: the same court held in 2021, in a newspaper editor's case under a collective agreement, that breaching a notification duty can justify an Abmahnung.

Federal civil servants have a stricter rule. Section 99 BBG requires prior approval for paid side activity, subject to listed exceptions. If a Land employs you, look up that Land's rules instead.

Non-EU nationals should read what is printed on their Aufenthaltstitel. Section 4a AufenthG requires each title to show whether and how you may work, and if yours was issued for one specific job, other gainful work is barred until the authority allows it. Section 21(6) lets the authority permit self-employment alongside another purpose of stay. For students, the DAAD says freelancing is possible only if the Ausländerbehörde permits it. Ask them before you apply.

The GDPR's Article 2(2)(c) exempts only purely personal or household activity, and the BDSG carries a similar carve-out for private bodies. Client or candidate conversations in your inbox are hard to fit inside that. We found no German authority addressing paid third-party access to a personal account, so regard it as open and clear those conversations out first.

How much demand is there for profiles from Germany?

A profile located in Germany sits outside the US-facing bulk of demand. The buyer you can realistically expect is a company selling into Germany or in German, which makes language part of the fit, and the wait for the right campaign can run long.

  • Helps: decision-makers among your connections who work in German, and a profile written in German or both languages.
  • Does little: an English-only profile with scattered international contacts and few in German companies.

We do not publish a list of eligible countries, and living in Germany neither qualifies nor disqualifies you. A specialist reviews the actual profile. If you want a straight answer first, ask in the notes box when you apply.

How it works

  1. Apply, free. Industry, network size, commitment length. No documents, no fee.
  2. Human review. A specialist sends one monthly figure, normally within three business days, or says the profile is not a fit.
  3. You approve each campaign. Target lists and message templates come to you first, and your blocklist is set on an onboarding call.
  4. Daily payment from the day your campaign goes live, with a monthly log of everything sent. Pause any time; after the three-month initial term, 30 days' notice ends it.

The risk, in plain terms

LinkedIn’s User Agreement prohibits this directly. Its Don’ts (section 8.2) bar members from renting, leasing or otherwise monetising access to the service, and from using another member’s account, including by sharing log-in credentials or copying cookies. LinkedIn may restrict, suspend or permanently close an account it believes is shared, without warning.

That risk stays with you, and we do not indemnify you against losing the account or its connections. This is why we would not call it risk-free passive income, whatever other sites say. Read our safety and risk page and sections 4 and 5 of our Terms.

Businesses in Germany: renting LinkedIn accounts for outreach

Section 7 UWG treats advertising by elektronische Post without prior express consent as unreasonable harassment, whether the addressee is a consumer or a business; only phone calls to businesses can rest on presumed consent, and the existing-customer route in section 7(3) does not help with cold contacts. A law-firm article of February 2026 reads InMails as caught and cites a Düsseldorf local court ruling (23 C 120/25) that a LinkedIn connection is not consent, though that case concerned email and we found no higher-court decision on LinkedIn messages. A German company should read the section before any LinkedIn outreach rental, and even a clean UWG answer would leave the renting itself prohibited by LinkedIn.

Our page for businesses explains how account-based outreach is run and what it costs to think through.

Questions people in Germany ask

Can I earn money from LinkedIn in Germany by renting out my profile?

You could, if a specialist accepts your profile and names a monthly figure, and once any Nebentätigkeit step with your employer is done. Dollars arrive daily from the day a campaign goes live, and converting them to euros and dealing with the Finanzamt are yours to handle. The catch is LinkedIn itself: renting out access is prohibited, and a restriction or closure is a real possibility.

Do I have to register with the Finanzamt for LinkedIn rental income?

It depends on how the income is classed, which is for the Finanzamt to decide. Freelance activity must be notified within one month under section 138 AO, and a trade also needs a Gewerbe notice to the local authority. Do not leave it until your annual return. A Steuerberater can tell you which is likely.

Is there a passive or side income allowance in Germany I can rely on?

There are figures, but no blanket allowance you can rely on. The 256 euro limit applies only to service income under section 22 no. 3 EStG, and once you reach it the whole amount counts. For employees, more than 410 euro of income without wage tax triggers an assessment. Ask a Steuerberater which of those two lines applies to you.

Do I have to tell my employer about LinkedIn rental in Germany?

Quite possibly, if your contract or collective agreement has a Nebentätigkeit clause. Some ask for notice and others for prior written consent. In a 2021 case about a newspaper editor, the Federal Labour Court held that breaching a notification duty can justify an Abmahnung, so read yours first.

Can I receive USDT in Germany for LinkedIn rental?

We would leave it out. ESMA told authorised providers in October 2026 to stop services around non-compliant stablecoins, and no Tether entity appears on its list of e-money token issuers, so selling it on an authorised platform is getting harder. USDC is listed, or take PayPal, Wise or a bank wire.

Can I do LinkedIn rental on a student visa or Blue Card in Germany?

Look at the wording on your residence title first, because the law requires it to show whether and how you may work. If it ties you to one job, other gainful work is barred until the authority allows it. The DAAD says students can freelance only with the Ausländerbehörde's permission. We have not seen a separate Blue Card rule, so confirm with that office.
